IRB Asiad 2007
Pakistan Promoted to DIV 2

RUGBY: The Rugby Asiad will be held in Sri Lanka from November 3 to 10, 2007.

Asian heavyweights Japan and Korea along with Hong Kong, Kazakhstan, Arabian Gulf, Sri Lanka, China, Singapore, Chinese Taipei, Malaysia, Thailand, India and Pakistan will be taking part in this tournament.

The President of the SLRFU DIG Nimal Lewke speaking at a press briefing at the SLRFU Headquarters yesterday said that the IRB had wanted Rushman Security Consultants, London to assess the security situation in Sri Lanka and submit a report but at the ARFU Council meeting held in Brunei he was able to convince the members that rugby was immensely popular in Sri Lanka with matches drawing large crowds which showed that it is safe for spectators and players and the 25 members of the ARFU unanimously approved the staging of the Rugby Asiad in Colombo this year.

He said that the Asiad will be played at Sugathadasa Stadium, Longden Place and Royal Sports Complex.

Lewke also said the ARFU tournament’s structure will be changed from next year where the top five teams Japan, Hong Kong, Korea, Kazakhstan and Arabian Gulf will play in an Asian Five Nations Tournament while Sri Lanka, China, Singapore and Chinese Taipei will vie for honours in Asian First Division while Malaysia, Thailand, India and Pakistan will battle it out in the Asian Second Division.
