Punjab, Army dominate in Rugby National
Lahore, December 2, 2006:
The 16th All-Pakistan National Rugby Championship kicked off in
style at the Defense Stadium today. Lt Gen Agha Jehangir Ali Khan
(R) Patron of the Pakistan Rugby Union inaugurated the tournament in
an impressive ceremony.
In its 16th year the All-Pakistan National Championship boasted the
largest ever field with 12 teams participating.
The opening match witnessed an upset with NWFP beating the more
experienced Sind team 20-7. Sind's solitary try
coming as a consolation as they chased the game for most of the
first half.
The Army showed great discipline, fitness and speed in beating a
spirited Lums A by 27 point to nil, including a try scored in just
15 seconds, directly from the kick-off.
The third match showed the Police going down by a solitary
conversion 12-10 after having led after the first try. The Punjab
Greens scored in the last minute to go to 10-all and then converted
to go ahead 12-10.
Punjab showed their poise and skills by dominating LUMS B 36-0, with
at least 5 Pakistan National Players in their squad. The early tries
were scored by Omar Butt and Arsalan "Alex" the Punjab and Pakistan Winger.
At the time of writing Wapda was on the field playing their first
game.
The IG Punjab Police, Mr Zia ul Hassan will be the chief guest for
the final which will kick off at the Defense L Block Stadium at 4 30
pm tomorrow.

Poised to Clash in Final
Lahore, December 3, 2006:
A colorful Rugby fest continued with all the leading National Rugby
players in action at the Defense Stadium, Lahore. The tournament is
now split up into Cup, Bowl and Plate events, with the Cup being the
premier competition to determine the National Champion for 2006.
In the first Cup quarter final, NWFP lost by 17 point to nil to
Central Zone, while in the second the Army showed how quickly they
are taking up the game by beating LUMS by 25 points to Nil.
Punjab (Greens) beat Sind 22 to 7 based on superior fitness and stamina. The fourth semi-finalist was
Punjab who beat Punjab Whites comprehensively by 24 points to nil.
The semi-final line up is thus: Army vs. Central Zone and
Punjab taking on Punjab Greens.
Meanwhile LUMS A were looking strong in the Bowl Competition along
with Baluchistan who advanced
at the cost of the Police.
Cup, Bowl and Plate Semi Finals will take place after the lunch
break with the main event, the Cup Final taking place at 4 30 pm.

Punjab Edge Out Army in Thrilling Rugby Final
A strong Punjab Team featuring 5 Pakistan Internationals became
National Champions at the 16th All Pakistan National Rugby
Championships. A spirited Pakistan Army team playing in their first
National Finals.
The final score was 24 to 7 representing a margin of four tries to
one. Arsalan Zahid the Punjab Winger who was also Man of the Match
scored two tries as did the fly half Umer Usman. Fawzan Wain
converted two of the tries.
Sepoy Fahad Ahmad Khan scored for the army in the first half. The
half time score was 14 to 7 in favor of Punjab
