Black
Panthers Rugby Club
Lahore
|
Even though they have not been playing long they showed great heart and most importantly great attitude and amazingly took 3 position. The forwards and set playes need some work but the back look good. they showed some tacking and good running skdills. Including A great try by Under 20 player Uzaar Hashimi in the dyeing minutes of the game won them the 3rd place Cup .
The club management has done a great job in managing the club. The boys in black show great promise in all aspects of rugby. most of the boys are studying to be accountants and go to the Professional Academy of commerce (pac) Lahore. They also managed to bring what seem to be the half of the collage to come out to support them which added great color to the game and this already shows great support for the club and a good fan base.

Asian
5 Nations
DIV II
Pakistan | Malaysia | China | India
1st-7th June 2009
Host : Malaysia Rugby Union

|
The
Pakistan
rugby
team
arrived
back
in
Lahore
after
a
tour
of
Malaysia
where
Pakistan
participated
in
the
Asian
5
nations
tournament
.
in
the
first
match
Pakistan
put
up a
brave
fight
in
the
first
half
against
a
Chinese
side
occupying
42th
spot
in
the
IRB
World
Rankings
and
trailed
only
15-12
with
first
half
tries
from
China
Arsalan
Zahid
and
Sair
Riaz
and
converted
by
Captain
Kashif
Khawaja.
|
 |
The
second
half was
played
under
grueling
and
humid
conditions
but the
Chinese
winger
scored
the
first
try
which
was
nullified
by a try
by
Kashif
Khawja
which he
converted
himself.
Pakistan
was only
one
converted
try away
from
beating
the team
ranked
42 in
the
world,
and for
the last
10
minutes
battered
the
China
defence
within
the
Chinese
22.
However
the loss
of a
player
to the
sin-bin
within a
minute
of the
restart
allowed
China to
stamp
their
authority
on the
match.
|
 |
The
second
match
between
Malaysia
and
India
was an
entertaining
affair
with
Mohd
Fairuz
Abd
Rahman
giving
the
hosts an
early
lead
with a
penalty
in a
match
which
saw the
full
back
contribute
15
points
of their
43
scored.
With
Malaysia’s
trio of
Fijian-born
players
combining
well in
the
centre
and the
right
wing,
the
hosts
consistently
made
ground
in the
backs
despite
some
strong
defence
from
India’s
centre
pairing
of
captain
Nasser
Hussain
– who
had
moved
from
back row
to
inside
centre –
and
Bikash
Jena. |
The
match
was
still
very
much in
the
balance
at half
time
with
Malaysia
leading
23-14,
an
advantage
cut
within
minutes
of the
restart
when
Rohaan
Sethna
kicked a
penalty.
However
Semi
Sovunidakua
then
collected
a nicely
weighted
kick
from fly
half
Mahammad
Faiz
Shamsukidir
to dot
down in
the
corner
for
Malaysia.
|
|
Further
tries
from
centre
Timoci
Nacokula
and
number 8
and
captain
Mohd
Azwan
Azimi
increased
that
advantage
to
40-17,
but
India
refused
to give
up with
the
match
already
lost and
score
two
tries in
the
final 10
minutes
through
Hussain
and
Ganesh
Sawant. |

An
interesting
spectator
in
the
crowd
with
England’s
record
try
scorer
Rory
Underwood,
who
returned
to
his
boyhood
home
in
Kuala
Lumpur
to
visit
the
tournament
after
helping
to
launch
this
year’s
HSBC
Asian
Five

in
Hong
Kong
in
April.
“In
the
first
game
between
China
and
Pakistan
both
teams
showed
a
lot
of
Endeavour
and
determination
and
in
the
second
game
the
standard
of
both
teams
was
really
great,”
said
Underwood.

On
the
final
Day
The
hosts
went
into
the
match
ranked
34
places
below
China
in
the
IRB
World
Rankings,
but
enjoyed
a
comfortable
victory
over
a
side
who
entered
the
tournament
with
only
19
players.
China
gave
it
their
all
and
defended
well
and
actually
took
the
lead
with
a
strong
attack
from
the
kick-off
allowing
Zhun
Chen
to
cross
the
try-line.
However
the
Malaysians
were
hungry
for
the
victory
before
their
fans
and
replied
almost
immediately
with
a
try
from
their
Fijian-born
centre
Nacani
Seniu,
the
conversion
slotted
between
the
uprights
by
fly
half
Mohammad
Faiz
Shamsukidir
who
caught
the
eye
throughout
with

LUMS SUPER VIII rugby tournament a great sucess
* Over
150 rugby players showed their skills at LUMS
*Islamabad Jinns are the 2009 champions
The final day
of the LUMS SUPER VIII rugby tournament lived up to
the expectations. A fully crowded rugby ground
witnessed three well-played rugby finals. A climax
to a great week of rugby in Lahore, with the top
Pakistani rugby teams in town to play for the Super
VIII crown.
The Islamabad
Jinns won the Cup final by a narrow margin of 5
points to zero, in a hard fought match against
Lahore RFC. It was a game full of intensity and
heart, with André Godinho of the Islamabad Jinns
proving to be the man of the match.
LUMS defended
the Shield by beating Bahria University 12 points to
5, showing another textbook game with great
line-outs and scrums, as well as good defensive
coordination.
The
Bahawalnagar Desert Camels retained the Bowl by
beating a young Punjab Rugby Association squad 17 to
5.
The best game
of the tournament was the Friday match between
Islamabad Jinns and LUMS. For its performance on and
off the field LUMS was elected the Fair Play Team of
the tournament.

Sahir Riaz,
from Lahore RFC, was voted the player of the
tournament, not only for showing great skills
throughout all matches, but also for being the
highest scorer.

LUMS boys give Islamabad Jinns a
scare
*Islamabad grinds out 17-0 victory in mammoth clash
*Lahore secure berth in final with comfortable 43-5 win
against Bahria University
LAHORE: The Lahore University of
Management Sciences (LUMS) Rugby team delivered a
serious scare to the Islamabad Jinns Rugby Club at the
university's home ground on Friday.
On the second day of the LUMS
Super Sixes Rugby tournament, LUMS went down to the
seasoned and formidable Jinns team by a meager margin of
three tries. The 17-0 score-line, however, represents a
significant victory for the development and
sixty-odd-year history of Pakistan rugby. .....More
LUMS SUPER VIII
Never before has a university side
seriously challenged either of the two premier rugby
clubs in the country, the Jinns and the defending
tournament champions, the Lahore Rugby Football Club
(LRFC). The bulk of the players that constitute the
nucleus of the current Pakistan national team play for
these two sides; hence, LUMS was not expected to pose a
serious threat to either of these clubs, at least this
time around. The LUMS boys had something else in mind.
On the same rugby pitch a little
later, as if to reinforce the significance of the
LUMS-Islamabad match, LRFC—after thrashing a developing
Bhawalnagar Desert Camels team 100-0 in a clinical
performance on the first day—ran home another
comfortable 43-5 victory against Bahria University.
The Bahria boys put together a
wholehearted effort, some excellent tackles, and one
spectacular breakaway try from a bobbled ball run in
from the forty meter mark, but they never truly
challenged Lahore for a place in the final of the cup
competition. Consequently, on Sunday (tomorrow), LRFC
will defend the title they won in an epic final against
Islamabad
last year.
The score-line of the LRFC-Bahria
UniversityLahore
match puts the result of the LUMS-Islamabad match in
context, for a similar score-line was expected by most
pundits. But, as the floodlights started to turn the
stretching blades of grass an almost neon luminescent, a
chill returned briefly to the fading winter, and an air
of anticipation seemed to hang suspended over the field.
From the kick-off the LUMS boys
came at Islamabad fearlessly and with intensity and
conviction. They put the seasoned Jinns back line under
serious pressure and soon penetrated deep into the
opposition half. The LUMS forwards also managed to
wrestle a significant amount of possession from the much
heavier and well-drilled Islamabad pack, and the
university team secured a penalty 35 meters from the
try-line in front of the posts early in the first half.
The penalty kick fell short and
then a few passes failed to find hands in the LUMS
back-line, resulting in a series of missed golden
opportunities that could have seen LUMS take a three to
10 point lead early on.
Nonetheless, as the Jinns pack
continued to pummel the inside corridor, LUMS coach
Miguel's constant cries of "bodyguard, bodyguard,"
inspired a dedicated LUMS defense into meeting the
crashing bulky Jinns head-on with crunching tackles.
Thirty five minutes into the match
and the scoreboard registered 0-0, the game deadlocked
midfield. The crowd, which included Pakistan Rugby Union
officials, stood stunned. Question marks started to take
shape on the faces of all witnesses to the spectacle.
Could this be happening? Could LUMS possibly pull off
the most stunning upset in the history of Pakistan
rugby?
It was not to be. The Islamabad
Jinns remain the most disciplined and well-drilled
squad, and one of the two best teams in the country.
They refused to allow the LUMS boys to get across their
try-line, and attacked relentlessly. Kashif Khawaja, one
of the established stars of the national team, continued
to take the agile and well-commanded Jinns back-line
wide, and near the end of the first half he burst
through a hole on the right flank 30 meters from the
LUMS try-line, cut back and side-stepped five defenders
to post a very hard-earned first score.
The level and intensity of the
match didn't drop in the second half. Islamabad secured
more possession, and continued to attack relentlessly
but LUMS held up well throughout. However, again as a
result of excellent ball movement in the backline, two
more national team players, Farid Niazi and Andre, ran
in another two tries to seal the encounter.
After what constituted a stunning
semi-final, the stage is now set for another epic climax
on Sunday. Aside from the above encounters, the first
two days of the tournament have seen resilient and
spirited matches from teams such as the Bhawalnagar
Desert Camels and the Pakistan Rugby Association team, a
squad for the first time composed of players from all
across Punjab's rural hinterland.
These two teams will contest
Sunday's bowl final. Going by LUMS' unforgettable
encounter with the Jinns, Bahria University will then
face a significant uphill task against LUMS in the plate
final. The cup will then be decided in a repeat of last
year's final between Lahore and Islamabad.
The cup final kicks off at 6pm,
and LUMS coach Miguel—who is the driving force behind
this remarkable tournament featuring the premier club,
university and district-based sides in the country—has a
message for the citizens of Lahore: "Come out and
support your two city sides, LRFC and LUMS. Both are
defending champions, we lifted the plate last year. No
one has forgotten last year's cup final, one of the best
matches ever seen in Pakistan. This promises to be just
as spectacular."

LUMS SUPER VIII rugby tournament a great sucess
* Over
150 rugby players showed their skills at LUMS
*Islamabad Jinns are the 2009 champions
The final day
of the LUMS SUPER VIII rugby tournament lived up to
the expectations. A fully crowded rugby ground
witnessed three well-played rugby finals. A climax
to a great week of rugby in Lahore, with the top
Pakistani rugby teams in town to play for the Super
VIII crown.
The Islamabad
Jinns won the Cup final by a narrow margin of 5
points to zero, in a hard fought match against
Lahore RFC. It was a game full of intensity and
heart, with André Godinho of the Islamabad Jinns
proving to be the man of the match.
LUMS defended
the Shield by beating Bahria University 12 points to
5, showing another textbook game with great
line-outs and scrums, as well as good defensive
coordination.
The
Bahawalnagar Desert Camels retained the Bowl by
beating a young Punjab Rugby Association squad 17 to
5.
The best game
of the tournament was the Friday match between
Islamabad Jinns and LUMS. For its performance on and
off the field LUMS was elected the Fair Play Team of
the tournament.

Sahir Riaz,
from Lahore RFC, was voted the player of the
tournament, not only for showing great skills
throughout all matches, but also for being the
highest scorer.

Win the Tournament

The 3rd Coca Cola Inter-district Rugby Championships
concluded yesterday, with a feast of rugby from no less
than 16 districts of the Punjab. The tournament was
opened by Idris Haider Khawaja, Secretary, Punjab
Olympic Association and saw a number of upsets.
Established rugby powerhouses like Lahore and
Rawalpindi, playing development squads, were upset by
teams with great potential and fighting spirit like
Gujranwala and Sheikhupura.

The current National Coach Rizwan Malik commented: “There is great potential among
the districts of Punjab with some excellent young
athletes. We want to make a combined
Punjab team to play against the National Side in the
fifteen a side format to develop talent at the highest
level.”
Sheikhupura beat Lahore DHA 7-5 by means of a
hotly contested last-minute interception try and in the
other semi-final Bahawalnagar proved too strong for
Gujranwala, winning by two tries to one, one of which
was converted. The final score was 12-5.
The final was an epic affair, with Bahawalnagar
displaying great technique and impressive rugby skills.
However, Sheikhupura saved several certain tries with
impressive desperate tackles and won their second
successive match by means of a last minute try. The
final margin was 7-5 with just a conversion separating
favorites Bahawalnagar from upset winners Sheikhupura.

played under humid and hot conditions and on a wet ground at the
Police academy stadium

pack and the back line combined very well and was able to keep
moving the ball forward in phases , most of the ball possession and
terrorist was enjoyed by Chinese Taipei and despite Pakistan having
bigger boys and a heavier pack were reduced to defending for
most of the game , the half time scores were 31-0 in favor of the
Chinese Taipei with the final score at 72-3 , Pakistan only being
able to convert a penalty obtained in the Chinese
Taipei
22. Skill level and fitness both ware a distinct difference in both
the teams.
Match referee

Thailand inflicts
heavy defeat on Pakistan in rugby Test
Lahore: Pakistan
suffered a heavy defeat in the first international rugby Test ever
held in the country, losing 44-0 to Thailand at the Defence Stadium
Saturday evening.
Before the game,
Thai team manager Adisak Hemyoo said, "Your players are much bigger
than us, by at least 100 kilos in the front row." Asked how the Thai
team would counter the weight and size disadvantage, Adisak said,
"we will use our speed; spin the ball out to the backs, spread the
game out to the wings."
This is exactly
what happened. The
Pakistan
team was unable to capitalize on its heavier pack as well as
opportunities that came their way. They made repeated mistakes,
allowing Thailand to score in the corner in the sixth minute, then
again in the 14th. Another converted try saw the score move to 24-0
at half time.
Pakistan was
not out of the game at this stage, and played that way for the first
sixteen minutes of the second half. But then the Thai backs exerted
too much pressure, despite some dogged advances up the field by
Pakistan,
and scored another two tries and two penalties. One of these
penalties the Thai flyhalf slotted from the halfway line, to which
the crowd reacted with awe. The game ended at 44-0.
Pakistan team
coach Rizwan Malik said, "The boys didn't believe in themselves on
the day. They had not played together for a year, and they made very
basic mistakes. Two tries in the first half and we would have been
in it. We have the core of a really good side, some very talented
individuals. They just need to play together a lot more to play as a
team." The overall fitness of the Pakistan team was also an issue,
he added.
International
Rugby Board (IRB) referee from Sri Lanka Dilroy Fernando, echoed the
Pakistan coach's comments and put the defeat in perspective: "The
Pakistan team has really improved. Thailand is very good. This is a
big step up. Holding them under 50 points is a good show." He also
pointed out that
Pakistan missed
three big scoring opportunities in the first half, and made unforced
errors, otherwise the match could have been closer. He singled out
Pakistan player Mani (Rehan Mansoor) as having played an outstanding
game.
Mani, one of two
Pakistan boys who flew over from England for the match, said,
"Experience won the day. We were too lateral in our play. They had
superior fitness and speed, we were always up against it."
Thailand team
Captain Pathomrat Sirisab said, "Our coach went to New Zealand and
learnt new techniques there. We trained very hard. We had not tried
these techniques in a match situation before. The
Pakistan
team is very big, but they were not quick enough. We were aware they
are much heavier, so we used our backline. We spread it to the
wings."
About 150 Lahore
citizens witnessed the match, mostly students and families, along
with the rugby fraternity, turned up to watch the match. "It was a
good match, but they were too good for us," said one spectator. For

Pakistan to take his side to an early 7-5 lead. The game
quietened down after this opening spell as the players began to feel
the humid temperatures.
Pakistan
extended their lead just before half time through number 8, Azmat
Khan, exploiting some sloppy defence by
Guam from a quick tap. This was converted by Kashif –
14 points to 5 in favour of
Pakistan at
the break.
Guam had several lapses in concentration throughout the
match, which cost them three tries and they will also be
disappointed by the many unforced errors that let scoring
opportunities go begging.
Pakistan put
Guam under real pressure in the second half by scoring a try
and a penalty to Kashif Khawaja and push the score out to 22 points
to 5. However as Guam started to hold their passes and utilise the
ball better the game became exciting and with six minutes to go
unbelievably the scores were locked up at 22-22 after Guam scored
two tries. Guam did, though, miss five kicks at goal, which proved
crucial as they had the fitness and displayed the skills as
Pakistan tired.
Big second row
sair alsam packed down at number 8 and fooled everyone by picking
the ball up from the base of the scrum, giving a small dummy pass
and ran 25 metres for what was the final score of the match 27 to 22
to Pakistan .
Kashif Khawaja was
outstanding for Pakistan . The team would
be very happy with the win
